Samsung's latest smart watch, the Galaxy Gear, had been heavily rumoured to feature NFC connectivity for easy pairing with a parent device. However, the device's official announcement has revealed that the watch does not feature NFC connectivity.

The Galaxy Gear itself does not have any NFC hardware. Instead, Samsung have equipped the Gear's charging unit with NFC connectivity, which means that the smart watch can only be paired to a parent device via NFC while it's docked in the charging unit.

The $299 watch does, however, offer normal Bluetooth pairing while away from the charger. Samsung's failure to include NFC as a standalone feature in the Gear provides a point of superiority to Sony's SmartWatch 2, which features built-in NFC pairing.
